The trail crew begins its work in mid-May, clearing one hundred miles of trail that stretches from Rooster Comb Mt. near Keene Valley to the Elk Lake-Marcy Trail south of the Upper Ausable Lake. ATIS trails reach, among others, the summits of Giant, Noonmark, Nippletop, Colvin, Haystack, Gothics, and Lower Wolf Jaw. They saw through fallen trees, clip protruding branches, and clear away encroaching undergrowth, and fight off the ubiquitous and voracious black flies. Once the trails are passable, they spend the rest of the summer improving the trails by building water bars, bridges, ladders, and stone staircases in order to prevent further erosion and to make the trails better and safer for the hiking public. The crew bonds as they share both the hardships of the strenuous work and the fierceness of a sleet or hale storm and also the rewards of seeing their projects completed and experiencing the beauty and grandeur of one of the most beautiful wildernesses on the earth. They share camaraderie, laughter, and songs around the campfire at night, as well as memories of the day's experiences. |
